# Related Rates Example: Falling Ladder

“A ladder is leaning against a house, and the bottom of the ladder is being pulled away from the base of the house at a certain rate…” – Open any calculus textbook on Earth, I dare you, and you’ll find this problem listed in the related rates chapter. It uses the Pythagorean Theorem to relate the length of the ladder, its distance away from the wall, and up the wall. We can then differentiate both sides with respect to time, t, to see how the rates are related.
