# Intro to Hyperbolic Functions

Hyperbolic functions are a special family of functions that are used in many engineering applications. Hyperbolic functions are defined in terms of e^{x} and e^{-x}, even though they resemble trig functions in the way that they are written. An interesting use of hyperbolic functions is modelling the “u” shape that a rope or chain makes as it hangs which is called a catenary. A catenary is expressed by a hyperbolic function.
